DeepFX featured on The Today Show

Matt Lauer and The Today Show hosted the Berns triplets from Texas on May 28 in their New York Studio.  The triplets were severly burned in a home fire nearly 18 years ago.  They were recently treated for mature scar tissue with the Lumenis UltraPulse DeepFX ablative fractional laser.  Their interview reports significant improvent in the tone texture and color of the burn scars and is a promising new application for the laser most commonly used for acne scarring.

Dr. Gentile Presents the New Facelift at ASPS meeting in Chicago Illinois

DR. RICHARD GENTILE INTRODUCES "THE NEW FACELIFT" AT AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLASTIC SURGERY MEETING IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
DA
TELINE (11/19/2008, Boardman,Ohio).
Dr. Richard Gentile a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon introduced the "Facelift of the Future" at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgery held in Chicago September 18-21, 2008

"Smartlifting™, the LaserSmartLift™ and the UltraMiniLift™ are proprietary procedures we have developed representing our specialty’s first laser assisted facelift. Utilizing the Cynosure SmartLipo™ 1064 Nd:YAG laser we are now able to gently separate the layer between the skin and facial muscles without extensive cutting and dissection. With Smartlifting™ operating time is significantly reduced as the laser helps to seal of blood vessels before the lifting portions of the facelift operation are begun. The laser also has the added benefit of strengthening collagen in the facial skin to reduce advanced facial wrinkles" said Dr.Gentile. As  Dr. Gentile explained, "Typically in a traditional facelift incisions are made next to the ear and then the skin is lifted off the facial muscles with scissors or scalpels. "Smartlifting™ powered by the Cynosure SmartLipo™ laser, works by precisely delivering thousands of tiny laser pulses into the layer separating the skin from the deeper tissues of the face. Each pulse heats a deep column of tissue which allows a separation to occur between the two layers. These zones of heating also shrink collagen, a structural element in the skin which is not possible in traditional facelifts. Furthermore, the skin continues to improve over time. Over the next several months following treatment, a natural process called collagenesis results in new, more organized collagen1. This collagen plumps the skin and results in even greater smoothing in addition to the results obtained by the facial lifting procedure." According to Dr. Gentile, nearly as important as the advanced laser technology is the use of technologically advanced new suture material the Quill®-SRS self-retaining suture during Smartlifting™ The new suture material allows us to actually lift and reposition the facial laxity without tying any knots. Dr. Gentile also introduced a new technique of lifting the facial laxity with a more vertical vector of lift utilizing the self retaining sutures. "The more vertical techniques adds volume to the cheeks and the midface restoring more youthful appearances to the aging face."

Smartlifting™ procedures benefit both the Plastic Surgeon and the patient notes Dr. Gentile. "The operating time for facelift procedures is dramatically reduced with Smartlifting™ and because it is a more gentle technique than traditional facelifts most of the procedures are performed without general anesthesia. These less invasive facelifts are exactly what many aging baby boomers are looking for ." Smartlifting™ is utilized for facial forehead and neck procedures and 117 procedures were reviewed in his paper presentation. The complication rate was very low and the patient satisfaction very high in the patients reviewed.  For more information on Smartlifting™ or the newly introduced procedures the LaserSmartLift™ or UltraMiniLift™ or SmartFirming™ call the main office 330-758-2001 or visit www.facialplastics.org .

DR. RICHARD GENTILE INTRODUCES "FACELIFT OF THE FUTURE" AT AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY MEETING IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS AND SMARTLIFTING™ IS FEATURED IN FOUR PRESENTATIONS DATELINE (09/19/2008, Boardman,Ohio). Dr. Richard Gentile a board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon introduced the "Facelift of the Future" at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery held in Chicago September 18-21, 2008

Dr. Gentile also noted some similarity in the Smartlifting™ technique to the laser assisted facial procedures featured in the 1997 John Wu movie "Face-Off" starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. Unlike the movie Dr. Gentile notes the surgeon still has to perform the surgery. Dr. Smartlifting™ is utilized for facial forehead and neck procedures and 117 procedures were reviewed in his paper presentation. The complication rate was very low and the patient satisfaction very high in the patients reviewed. In addition to the new technique paper he presented a one hour instructional course that was attended by nearly 100 surgeons interested in learning about these new breakthroughs in facelift techniques. Smartlifting™ was also presented by Dr. Gentile in the Expert Panel on Facelifting as well as the Emerging Technology Panel. SmartLipo- Over a year later
We were the first Plastic Surgery practice to introduce SmartLipo to northern Ohio... So what exactly is SmartLipo

Old Lipo: usually under general anesthesia, loose skin remains where fat is sucked out, a 4-to 6-mm tube sucks out solid fat; lots of tissue trauma, scarring where tube enters body; stitches often required, resume work after a week.

SmartLipo: always with local anesthesia, tightened skin from collagen production where lasers are used (visible after three to six months), 1-mm tube fitted with laser melts fat; little trauma, almost no scarring; no stitches needed, resume work after two days.

Why is laser liposuction better than old-school lipo?

Traditional liposuction uses a vacuum with a metal tube attached, which the doctor moves back and forth manually. Because the human hand cannot be very precise, you get a lot of bleeding, swelling and destruction of tissue. But the SmartLipo laser glides through fat like a hot knife through butter, which means less destruction and bruising.

What is the biggest improvement?

Now we can treat a lot more people who, before, would need to have surgery on top of liposuction – either a neck or face lift, because loose skin would get worse from the lipo. Or if they had loose, flabby skin on the arms, they only thing we could do was to cut out the skin.

Now we can use the laser to take out the fat and, as an added benefit, tighten the overlying skin too.

What is laser lipo considered safer?

Because you do not have to go under general anesthesia. There is no surgery that is completely safe, but there have been no serious side effects associated with this procedure. And the recovery times are much faster.

How much fat can one remove in a session?

We do not usually exceed 8 lbs.  SmartLipo is for sculpting, not for large volume fat removal.

Where does the liquefied fat go?

The vast majority of fat is either squeezed out of the incisions – like oozing blood – or suctioned out. But because you are suctioning liquid fat, instead of solid, it is not as traumatic. In addition, a very small amount of the fat is absorbed by the body and excreted, probably within 24 hours.

The fat absorbed by the body – are you sure it does it not enter the blood stream?

Blood tests show there is no increase in fatty levels, cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood; there is no increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

How do patients feel after the procedure?

Most people go back to work after two days. They will, however, wear compression bandages for two weeks, on average, compared to up to six weeks with regular lipo.

How long do the results last?

They are permanent. The body has a finite number of fat cells; removed cells do not grow back.

Dr. Gentile Introduces Lumenis Fractional Laser Treatments to Northern Ohio
We pride ourselves in being Ohio's most technologically advanced plastic surgery practice. We were the first Plastic Surgery practice to employ SmartLipo techniques and Smartlifting in Northern Ohio.  This year we are pleased to introduce the latest in Fractional resurfacing lasers, the Lumenis Ultrapulse Deep Fx and Active Fx fractional laser.

Millions of Americans seek relief from the effects of sun and aging: fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, age spots and uneven skin tone. However for today's more active population, the prolonged healing with conventional laser treatments or surgey prevents many of them from seeking improvement.

The latest advancement in the treatment of aging skin, Bridge Therapy is a family of fractionated procedures delivered by the UltraPulse Encore CO2 laser.  The most common procedure, ActiveFX, is performed in a single treatment with minimal patient downtime. During fractional treatment, only a portion of the skin’s surface is treated by the laser, leaving small “bridges” of untouched skin. This technique makes the healing process much quicker and enables patients to get back to their normal life styles sooner.

For patients seeking a less invasive and highly effective skin rejuvenation treatment, Dr. Richard Gentile and the Facial Plastic & Aesthetic Laser Center now offer ActiveFx & DeepFX,  unique fractional laser treatments that treats fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and crepey skin in a single, low downtime treatment. "Revolutionary Active Fx & DeepFX fractional technology now allows us to treat acne scars and signs of aging without the prolonged healing times often associated with older, more traditional treatments," says Dr. Gentile who is internationally recognized  for his expertise in Laser Skin Rejuvenation.

ActiveFx and DeepFx are fractional laser procedures done in a single treatment unlike the Fraxel or Affirm lasers.  During the procedures, a high energy beam of laser light interacts with the skin's surface, causing the upper layer to peel off and regenerate a new layer of healthy skin. The laser also stimulates formation of new underlying collagen, which results in continued improvement in skin texture over time.

Like ActiveFx which has been a popular fractionated treatment for years, the newer DeepFX treatments provide dramatic and immediate results.  Treatment does more that soften the appearance of imperfections, it can actually eliminate evidence of sun damage and aging, providing a comprehensive and long lasting solution. In fact, improvement continues long after treatment.  In the months following treatment new collagen is generated deep in the skin, continuing the improvement of skin texture.

Sculptra Now Available at the Center

Sculptra®... a sculpting agent that restores volume to correct the signs of facial fat loss

Sculptra® has been safely used outside the United States since 1999 in over 150,000 patients under the trade names New-Fill™ and Sculptra®.

Facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra® is a safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. It provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. No skin testing is required.

What It Does

Sculptra® is an injectable product that restores and corrects the signs of facial fat loss by replacing lost volume. Sculptra® provides an increase in skin thickness, helping to create a more natural facial appearance in those with facial lipoatrophy.

Sculptra® is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material. Sculptra® is not made from human or animal sources and does not require a skin test. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for many years in surgical products. The effects are long-lasting; they were shown in a clinical study to last for up to 2 years after the first treatment session.
